Let’s use technology to preserve African farming wisdom

Dr. Mourine Sarah Achieng

In her TEDxJohannesburg talk, Mourine Sarah Achieng passionately advocates for the preservation of indigenous knowledge amidst rapid technological change. Using an African proverb, she warns of the imminent loss of traditional wisdom within two decades. Achieng, a digital transformation researcher, proposes leveraging technology to document and transmit this knowledge. Focusing on agriculture, she emphasises the cultural importance of preserving African traditions and calls for bridging generational gaps. Achieng's compelling call to action envisions a future where technology and culture unite to secure food sovereignty, beginning at the individual household and extending to regional development.

Mourine is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of South Africa’s Graduate School of Business Leadership in the Department of Digital Transformation and Innovation, where she focuses on research and student supervision. Her research interests are in the use of technology to address socio-economic, cultural, and environmental barriers. She believes that technology should be used to address societal issues to create opportunities for all.
